Produce an excellent biofertilizer by composting all your organic food waste.

The ALKE EcoSilos® for food composting are an innovative, healthy, and sustainable solution. They transform organic waste into high-quality compost, promote circular economy, and reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers.

This scalable solution can be implemented in homes, restaurants, hotels, cafeterias, and more, contributing to soil improvement and crop quality while facilitating the clean and safe management of non-biodegradable solid waste.

The result is a nutrient-rich biofertilizer produced from all kitchen and dining organic waste.

Turning waste into resources.

The ALKE EcoSilos®, designed by engineer Alois Kennerknecht, are non-airtight underground silos where controlled aerobic decomposition occurs, transforming kitchen waste into high-quality compost. Their modular design allows scalability for various settings, from homes to commercial establishments. By composting all food waste, they promote circular economy principles and reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers, fostering both environmental and economic sustainability. The EcoSilos ALKE® represent a significant step towards more efficient waste management and sustainable agriculture.

A unique solution

The EcoSilos ALKE® for food composting represent a key innovation in the sustainable management of organic waste and the production of high-quality compost. Designed by Alois Kennerknecht, a German agronomist with extensive experience in developing sustainable environmental solutions and low-tech innovations, this patented design offers an effective, safe, and clean composting system. It can be installed in very small spaces and does not attract pests, making it a simple and scalable solution to transform food waste into high-quality organic fertilizer. At UNU, we are proud and grateful to represent our friend Alois with this product in the Cusco region.

Design and functionality

The EcoSilos ALKE® for food composting are non-airtight underground capsules, manufactured on-site directly in natural terrain. Their design promotes aerobic decomposition, facilitating nutrient and microorganism exchange between compost and soil. This encourages predictable, efficient, and safe decomposition while maintaining a controlled and stable temperature, suitable for diverse climates. They are odor-free and can be installed in small spaces.

Scalability and applications

Designed to process 100% of the solid organic waste from domestic or commercial kitchens and dining areas, EcoSilos ALKE® can handle raw ingredients as well as prepared food, including animal protein and bones. Depending on environmental factors and management practices, they can transform up to 6 m3 of waste, reducing its final volume by approximately 15 times. Their modular design allows scalability for homes as well as larger waste-producing facilities such as dining halls, hotels, restaurants, and more.

Management and production

Microorganisms, biochemical reactions, and sometimes worms, drive an aerobic decomposition process that is methane-free and should be managed under simple parameters. A household with three to five inhabitants can operate with two EcoSilos ALKE® units—one receiving material and the other composting. This method involves rotating units so that the oldest remains in decomposition for six months. A significant advantage of this solution is that it requires no turning, hydration, or other activities, only the disposal of waste as it is generated.

Improvement in the management of non-biodegradable solid waste

In addition to being safe for health and beneficial for the environment, the EcoSilos ALKE® system is an excellent catalyst for segregating non-biodegradable solid waste for reuse or recycling. By composting 100% of food waste, it enables a clean and organized management of non-organic solid waste, minimizing the use of plastic bags for waste disposal and reducing the effort required for collecting and disposing of recyclable materials.

Tool for sustainability

This system represents a significant step towards a circular economy, where waste is turned into valuable resources instead of being discarded. It is an invaluable tool for waste reduction, improving soil health, protecting water bodies, and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Usage Instructions

The ALKE® EcoSilos are designed to process organic waste, typically from kitchens and dining areas. For optimal performance, it is important to dispose of mixed waste, chopped into small pieces to facilitate aerobic decomposition and prevent unnecessary bloating.

What can be processed in ALKE EcoSilos®

All raw, cooked, or decomposed food waste is welcome, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, peels, seeds, grains, meat, sausages, fish, bones, cheese, bread, cakes, dough, and eggs.

This also includes paper towels, napkins, toilet paper, tea bags, and pet waste.

What cannot be processed in ALKE EcoSilos®

Do not add water, oil, or other liquids.

Avoid disposing of large amounts of a single material at once, as this could suffocate the decomposition process.

Under no circumstances should inorganic materials like plastic, glass, metal, cardboard, or others be added.

Weeds and pruning materials from crops or gardens are not processed in this system; these materials should be composted using other methods.
